Traveling to the U.S. from Canada?

I’m heading down to #asw (Affiliate Summit) in Las Vegas on Saturday and after checking both the Air Canada and sites, realized that my wheeled laptop case would not be accepted as carry-on luggage — they would demand that it be checked.
Right.
I’ve seen how baggage handlers launch bags (and guitars) onto the conveyor and after having airport security break one Vaio, I’m not about to let those guys take a crack at wrecking another one.
So, I bought a cheapo Certified Data laptop bag at London Drugs today, similar to the one shown below from eBags.
Here are the allowances as posted on the Air Canada site.
1 or more personal items
Maximum weight of 10kg (22lb).
Important: Please consult Transport Canada guidelines or visit the CATSA website for details on permissible carry-on items such as:

- book, magazine
- small electronic device such as cell phone or MP3 player
- diaper bag
- laptop computer (in regular carrying case)*
- camera
- musical instrument

Great prices, lightweight and good-looking – what more could you want from a piece of luggage?
PRLog (Press Release) “ Oct 23, 2008“ It happens right about now. A sudden, jarring thought that the holidays are, in fact, coming. Holiday travel, holiday gifts, and holiday happiness-neatly squeezed into a precious window of time. The exciting news is that everything can be easily achieved with one smart purchase: fabulous and affordable Frommer’s Luggage.
Whether journeying across the state or around the world, the travel adventure will be enhanced with this handsomely crafted luggage collection. Lightweight yet powerfully durable, each bag expertly combines superb quality and exceptional detail with the heavy-duty construction and modern practicalities required by today’s stricter travel environments.
According to Frommer’s Luggage representative Cheryl Schulte, “Traveling is a whole new ballgame today, and new technologies in lightweight luggage can make holiday travel easier, more comfortable, and with the new surcharges, definitely less expensive. I think that’s why we’re seeing luggage making a comeback as a great gift in anticipation for a family vacation, or for college students, newlyweds, and those recent retirees who either don’t have luggage or just some old pieces stashed in the basement.”
With performance-engineering and an innovative patent-pending fiberglass graphite frame, Frommer’s Luggage elevates comfort and easy handling to a new level-with pieces that are up to 40 percent lighter than comparable luggage on the market today. The rugged polyester fabric withstands rough handling and all-weather conditions, while the fully lined interior features webbed tie-down straps for organizing packed clothes and mesh pockets for personal items. In addition, the lid has a zip-out “suiter” panel, cinch strap for hanging garments, two tie-downs straps, and a zippered mesh pocket. Uprights also include a wet pack.
For extra versatility, each piece of Frommer’s Luggage is thoughtfully designed with a detachable “add-a-bag” strap for carrying extra bags hands-free. Travelers will also appreciate the front panel construction with two packing pockets and the trolley uprights that expand two inches for extra packing capacity, as well as the lockable self-repairing nylon coil zippers on the main opening. Equally impressive and highly reflective of Frommer’s insightful approach to traveling are the many details that ensure the ultimate ease of handling. Some of the added features that make Frommer’s Luggage more convenient for travelers are:
- Protected VelocityT inline skate wheels
- One-button operation locking trolley handle system
- A zippered back pocket with integrated ID tag on all uprights
- Top and side “comfort” carrying handles
- Molded polypropylene curb guards and kickplate
Ideally suited for everything from extensive travel to a grab-and-go weekend escape, Frommer’s Luggage is available in classic black and dashing burgundy in six classic pieces: a personal bag, trolley tote and garment bag, as well as expandable suiter trolleys in 21 inches, 25 inches and 29 inches.
Frommer’s Luggage is now available for purchase on eBags.com, luggage.com and other online retailers. Individual pieces in the collection range at a promo retail price of $39.99 to $119.99.
I Love My Baggallini Bags!

Let me say this first, I hate handbags and I absolutely refuse to carry one when I’m at home.
However, when I’m traveling, there are items that you absolutely must carry around with you i.e. passport and airline tickets to the airport, during transfers etc., that make having a handbag (or tote, or backpack) essential.
So, I was absolutely delighted when I discovered the Bagallini Messenger bag shown left (me in Singapore) and right.
It seemed to me that this bag had been designed by someone who travels a LOT.
TSA-accepted Luggage Locks

TSA screens every passenger’s baggage before it is placed on an airplane.
While their technology allows them to electronically screen bags, there are times when they need to physically inspect a piece of luggage. TSA has worked with several companies to develop locks that can be opened by security officers using universal “master” keys so that the locks may not have to be cut. These locks are available at airports and travel stores nationwide. The packaging on the locks indicates whether they can be opened by TSA.
Not sure where to get a compatible lock in your area? Check these ones out:

Back in October 2005, Ed and I took a 3 week tour of China that included stays in Beijing, Shanghai, Guilin (the mammary mountain region), Xian (to see the terra-cotta warriors) and Hong Kong (to buy fake Rolexes… what else?).
We also took a four-day cruise up the Yangtze River… or maybe it was ‘down’ the Yangtze River. I’m not really sure. Read more
