Banks Lake OverlookLeaving the Grand Coulee Dam behind, we drove along Banks Lake, formerly a dry coulee formed by the MegaFlood during the Pleistocene era.

The lake is now a 27 mile long reservoir and part of the Columbia Basin Project, a major water resource project to provide irrigation water to the arid lands of central Washington. Water is typically pumped into Banks Lake from May to September during the typical growing seasons on area farms.

Laser Light Show at the Grand Coulee Dam

Grand Coulee Dam VisitIf you find yourself overnighting in or around Grand Coulee, Washington, the laser light show is the thing to see.

One of the largest light shows in the United States, Grand Coulee Dam laser light show started in 1989. The 37 minute long narrated show tells the story of how the dam came to be built and includes a dramatic flag-waving finish. The show premiered in 1957 with flood lamps and has been modified as technology has evolved.

Grand Coulee Dam VisitThe first stop on our Washington / Oregon / California road trip was the Grand Coulee Dam where we stayed overnight in Electric City, Washington, specifically to see the laser light show.

Arriving in Coulee City at around 4PM, we were able to check out the Visitor’s Center and still catch one of the last dam tours (that sounds bad, doesn’t it?) that day.
