Two Days at Crater Lake

Boat Launch on Cleetwood Trail After my last road trip from B.C. down to California, I regretted that I hadn’t swung by and taken a look at Crater Lake. Getting to spend 2 days in the Crater Lake area on this road trip more than made up for that previous oversight.

Arriving in the evening of the first day and having checked in at the Diamond Lake Resort, Ed and I drove up to the rim via the North Entrance to watch the sunset. Although clouds prevented that from happening, we were truly stunned by our first view of the lake.

Air Canada: We Want an Apology

December 4, 2007 by Rosalind Gardner

I book all of my travel online either through the airline’s site (usually Air Canada) or Expedia. When I make changes to my bookings, I do that online too.

Case in point.

Yesterday morning, I was scheduled to travel on the 06:50 Air Canada flight from Vegas to Vancouver.

Because I wanted to attend the after-conference festivities on Sunday night, on Sunday afternoon I went online and modified the booking to take the 13:12 departure routed through Denver and operated by Ted / United Airlines.

I got confirmation of the change (see the graphic image below) and trusted that all would be well.

When I got to the airport, I was delighted to be able to avoid the long line-up for Economy Class check-in and go straight to the head of the Executive Class check-in line — because I’ve bought that privilege through my American Express card.

Doing so was fortunate — because I stood at the counter for 30 minutes to get checked-in for the flight.

For whatever reason, Air Canada neglected to pass information about the modified booking to its Star Alliance partner, United Airlines. After calling Air Canada 3 times, the United Airlines agent finally managed to bring the information up on his terminal.

Meanwhile, as there was only one agent serving the Executive Class passenger lineup, everyone after me in line also had to wait that long.

As a customer who is probably in part responsible for saving Air Canada a TON of money (that it no longer needs to spend on reservations agents) I would hope that they would invest those savings in a system that actually works.

Moreover, that system should be programmed to detect when a passenger has been inconvenienced to the extent that they’ve missed the chance to grab a bite to eat at the airport before boarding a flight that serves nothing more than pretzels.

Perhaps the “system” could send that passenger an email that acknowledges and apologizes for the inconvenience. Better yet, attach a $10 coupon that would buy 2 beers — a 330 calorie lunch. :-)

No Frills New York Pod Hotel

If you are planning a trip to New York you are aware that hotels are very expensive. There is a new hotel that has been open for a month called the Pod. This is a no frills hotel that offers rooms in the $100.00 a night area, some with shared bathrooms.

It has no restaurants but that isn’t a problem as it is located on 51st Street just a few blocks from the Museum of Modern Art, Rockefeller Center and Fifth Avenue shopping.

So if you are in New York to check out the sites or to shop why not spend you money on those activities rather than on a hotel room.

Travelers reviews on Expedia give the Pod a 4 out of 5 rating.

Dirtiest Hotel in America

The list that no hotel wants to be on is the Dirtiest Hotel in America.
Five out of the ten hotels are located in Florida. The worst being the Tropicana Resort Hotel, Virginia Beach, Vir.

TripAdvisors Travelers Choice Awards for 2006 were presented to Hotels that excelled in various categories. These include Best Luxury, Best Service, Best Inns, Best for Romance, Best Pool, Best for Families, Best Bargains and Best Hidden Gems.

Unlike other awards that get comments from selected travelers these are based on the comments left by millions of travelers at Tripadvisor.com

Ros and I like to use Expedia when choosing hotels. We like to read the comments left by our fellow travelers. If a hotel is constantly getting good reviews it’s a pretty safe bet.
