Outside of Juneau’s downtown is where the real action is.
Purported to be ‘home to many eagles’, we drove 29 miles north to the Eagle Beach Recreation Area, an extensive intertidal mudflat, where we saw ONE eagle perched on a post at the mouth of Eagle Creek amidst thousands of squawking gulls.
The view of the Chilkat Peninsula on the western side of the canal makes for a stunning backdrop, however and a couple of hours venturing around the mudflat was a very pleasant way to spend some time.
South of Juneau, past Thane, we saw more frenzied seagulls feasting as salmon struggled to deposit their roe upstream on Sheep Creek.
In fact, every beach we visited was littered with dead fish and the accompanying aroma.
Might explain why my usual taste for salmon was dampened throughout the remainder of our trip.
