Grand Coulee Dam

Grand Coulee Dam VisitThe first stop on our Washington / Oregon / California road trip was the Grand Coulee Dam where we stayed overnight in Electric City, Washington, specifically to see the laser light show.

Arriving in Coulee City at around 4PM, we were able to check out the Visitor’s Center and still catch one of the last dam tours (that sounds bad, doesn’t it?) that day.

The visitor center is open daily (except New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas) from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with extended hours between Memorial Day and September 30. Call (509) 633-9265 for details. The visitor center is fully accessible and features hands-on exhibits, an auditorium, and restrooms.

Grand Coulee Dam VisitExhibits include:

  • The Power of Water
  • We Built This Dam: Oral History
  • Our Stories: The Tribal Viewpoint
  • “Memorable Moments” Scrapbook
  • “Getting Started” Scrapbook 1933-1938
  • “Finishing the Job” Scrapbook 1938-1980

The free guided tours of the Third Powerplant lasts about 45 minutes, includes a ride on an incline elevator and is accessible to people using wheelchairs. Tours are available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except in December and January.
