1,000 Places to See Before You Die

Posted January 26, 2008 by Rosalind Gardner · Filed Under Books, Travel Guides

Here’s a review that I posted to Amazon after seeing a number of negative comments about Patricia Shultz’s “1,000 Places to See Before You Die: A Traveler’s Life List“.

I received “1,000 Places to See Before You Die: A Traveler’s Life List” as a birthday gift from a friend a few years ago and it has since become one of the most well-thumbed volumnes in our travel library.

It’s fun to scan our green highlighted entries and remember with pleasure the places we’ve been, as well as review entries we’ve marked with stars as places we plan to visit.

I’m not sure how anyone can make the suggestion that the book is a ‘grandpa list’ with off the beaten track trips such as “a ballon ride over Masai Mara” and “the Tasman Glacier” listed right on the front cover. I don’t see many 80 year olds on those types of adventures.

Although I agree that the Toronto Four Seasons listing is dubious when so many locations of interest in Canada seem to be missing, the food at the Four Seasons is actually quite fine.

I recommend 1,000 Places to See Before You Die: A Traveler’s Life List as a good starting point for creating your own list of places to see before you die.

Conde Nast Chooses the Top 86 Travel Books of All Time

Posted September 25, 2007 by Rosalind Gardner · Filed Under Travel Guides

September’s Conde Nast Traveller lists the top 86 travel books of all time, as chosen by a star-studded panel (including Paul Theroux, Monica Ali, Jared Diamond, Geraldine Brooks, and Gore Vidal).

Here’s a small sample of those selected:

  • Endurance: Shackleton’s Incredible Voyage
  • The Great Railway Bazaar
  • The Journals of Lewis and Clark (Lewis & Clark Expedition)
  • Roughing It by Mark Twain
  • The Worst Journey in the World: Antarctic 1910-1913

Oh, wouldn’t it be absolutely lovely to have the time to read them all? :-)

BTW, I could have added about 30 more to their list.

Save Big on Travel

Posted January 11, 2007 by Ed Szajniak · Filed Under Books

When I plan to go on vacation I love doing the research on the places we will visit. Making sure we take advantage of all the culture and history of the location has to offer. I find this task an adventure of discovery that builds the anticipation of going.

On the other hand searching the data bases for the best deal on airfares, hotel rooms and car rentals gives me a severe pain, can it get more confusing. Then there are the package deals… by the time I spend a day or two going over these I need a rest home not a vacation. The experience of planning the logistics has taken all the fun out of going.
