Travel Tips
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Found Budget Travel on Amtrak. Easy read and informative. Gave me ideas for future trips. My Travel Tip: Hair Conditioner in a pinch. You forgot your hair conditioner and the hotel combination shampoo/conditioner does not tame your locks. To get you through the day, place a dab of body lotion (often supplied by hotel) in palm of hand, add water and work through hair. Do not rinse.
Great Trip Suggestions
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This magazine is great. I read everyone article each month. It provides tons of suggestions and tips for how to save money. It also highlights little known things that you shouldn’t miss when you travel.
It has gone downhill fast
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
This magazine used to be very thorough, and it used to be very good at providing me with TONS of deals and tips that I never would have found on my own. It was great, and very opinionated. But last year sometime, they changed the look of it and now there’s a lot less text. It’s much more a style magazine now, and that’s not what I want in a travel magazine that I have bought to tell me about money saving! Worse, except for the 40 Best Vacation Bargains, which are still okay, most of the articles forget to incluce a lot of money-saving tips and instead they too often suggest I do expensive things. Since when is a $225 a night hotel considered budget?? The headlines and captions are expecially smart-aalecky. It’s not as good with the expert advice as it used to be! I noticed that Arthur Frommer isn’t editing it anymore which maybe is why–bring him back! My search for a true money-saving travel magazine has unfortunately resumed again.
Good Content, but lousy delivery
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This is a great magazine with some interesting articles. It’s a very quick read though, and I do wish they’d write about some more exotic vacation options. They seem to focus way too much on U.S. travel.
I like the editorial tone and do read (and enjoy) the editor’s letter (something I rarely do with other magazines).
My main problem is that I’m constantly receiving my issue in the mail one or two months after it’s out in the stands. I complained, but didn’t receive a response. I’m not impressed. I’m not sure if I’m going to renew my subscription.
I’d love to see a magazine that combined fitness advice and travel information. I’d subscribe to that in a heartbeat!
BEST TRAVEL MAGAZINE
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I love this magazine, the trues stories of other people’s travels is well worth it. I look forward to this magazine every month. The tip section is really good as well and I have used some of them as well.
This magazine is great for the beginer traveler and the more advance traveler as well. There are some really good deals in here as well.
The stories and places to visit will want you to pack your bags and go the following day.

Budget Travel is a quite a neat colorful magazine and is loaded with exotic far-away landscapes that do what they are designed to and give one a lift into dreamland. I also like some, not all, of their articles which tend to be well prepared and nicely written.
However, at the same time, it does need better organization as compared with (Horrors)Conde Nast.
I am diverting a bit but you may as well know that accessing your web site is impossible – I cant access it!!!
Hilarious True Stories section
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
In the back of this magazine is a terrific “true stories” section about mis-adventures and lucky situations that occur while traveling. They are laugh-out-loud funny! I love reading them to my kids. The pictures with the stories are priceless such as the chicken that built a nest under a Popeye’s Fried Chicken drive-through.
Budget Travel International Subscription Flunks
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
My one year Budget Travel (international) subscription has just finished and I have received only 5 out of 10 issues. Since only 50% (!) of my subscription actually reached me, Budget Travel actually deserves ZERO stars.
Budget Travel sells international subscriptions, but in reality they are not able to offer this service. In addition, their online “Subscriber Services” do not work correctly to change addresses or report missing issues.
Unfortunately my Budget Travel subscription has been more of a hassle than anything else. I won’t be recommending this subscription to anyone!
Bargain Traveling in the U.S and Around the World
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Arthur Frommer is a giant among vacationing and traveling professionals and his magazine, Budget Travel, is a great place to look for bargain deals and general advice on the subject of travel. This publication is owned by the same people who bring Newsweek to the world and it is one of my favorite travel- related periodicals.
I have been reading this magazine for more than a year now. My favorite sections are “True Stories” (actual mishaps and funny occurrences that took place while traveling, sent in by readers), “Road Trip” (a 3 or 4 day automotive journey in some area of the U.S., complete with road map), and “40 Best” (a listing of 40 great travel deals from around the world, complete with pricing, phone numbers, and web sites for more information). Besides these regular departments, Budget Travel includes some good general articles (about 3 or 4 every month) that vary each month, about the subject of travel. These articles can cover anything from local culture to cost- cutting tips. And the places covered are varied from month to month. Sometimes, they are well- knonw destination. Other times, they are out of the way places that have something unique to offer.
One thing that is a little different with Budget Travel is the fact that it really does try to stress ways to save money on vacation. Unlike certain other travel magazines, this one doesn’t waste the reader’s time with pure fantasy by covering destinations that are incredibly costly and out of the reach of most people. It sticks to its mission and strives to bring you great deals and tips on travel.
One section of this magazine that I’m not too fond of is the “20 Tips”- a monthly department that provides miscellaneous bits of advice on travel, sent in by readers. There is no organization to this section and the tips include a mixture of both helpful and impractical advice. The problem with some of it is that it is so specific that the chances of anyone ever having the described situation actually occur is slim to none. Better organization (there is no order to this section at all- you have to skim for something useful) and more editing would improve this feature.
This magazine publication comes out ten times per year (the December/January and July/August issues are combined into one) and it carries a low subscription price. It’s the type of magazine that easily pays for itself many times over with its timely advice and tips on stretching your vacation dollar.
Great magazine

What can I say. Budget Travel is a great magazine, but has too many ads. There are many tips and tricks that are discussed in the magazines issues that are important. I would order it again.

I ordered this magazine in January and three months later, I still haven’t received the magazine; although my credit card was immediately charged when I placed the order.
Great Magazine for Parents Who Need to Travel with Kids
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We have a fairly large family by today’s standards- six of us total. This magazine is great for budget travel tips if you are still trying to travel but need to watch your spending. It gives tips on the best time to buy tickets, when to visit certain destinations etc… We love it! You shouldn’t have to stop travelling just because you have a lot of kids-this mag shows you how to do it!
Inspiration
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I love this magazine, I’m so excited every month it arrives! (10 issues a year) I was disapointed at how long it took for the subscription to kick in, but once it did I can’t complain about anything! Once I realized an issue hadn’t come; I called customer service and the issue was delivered in 3 days.
I first saw this magazine at my cousins while house sitting. I asked them about it and they said that it is why they travel so much. They have a “just for travel” savings account and when they get some money saved… they look through the “40 Best” Trips and pick one! I want to “pick one” too!
I’m on a budget and take lots of in-country trips to visit friends and family. I just started my own “travel savings account” because I’m going to Uganda next year!
I also added 2 years to my subscription

I have not yet recieved this magazine, how could it be reviewed?
Gone down hill fast
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This used to be one of the best travel magazines out there. Now they have changed the format a bit. They seem to have different staff, focus, and no new info.
They have been re-hashing old deals, not focusing on the truly good deals anymore. The magazine used to point you to the best possible deals out there, now they only seem to point to deals from people who advertise in the magazine. I can find better deals in 2 minutes of web surfing. The travel reviews have gone from truly insightful accounts to veiled infomercials for a destination. If you want to find the truly best deal this magazine is no longer a source.
It’s sad to see a once great magazine go so far down hill.
A great magazine…
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
What I like about this magazine is that it does not focus on mainstream attractions and destinations. It tries to go off the beaten path, and provides many suggestions of places to visit, restaurants to eat at, and even specific places to shop. Not only that, on every issue they have a list of awesome travel tips provided by travelers. In addition they list great travel specials and the corresponding websites. I’ve been a subscriber for approximately 6 months, and I have to say that I enjoy this magazine.
Good and Useful Information
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Frommer’s Budget Travel always has something I can use – every month. Their 20 quick tips are great, the features are actually trips that can be taken without breaking the bank. 2 thumbs up!
Beware! Issues arrive very late or not at all

I subscribed to this magazine in August and just received the SEPTEMBER issue now! Budget Travel’s Customer service is terrible, I’ve complained several times but am still missing the August, October and November issues, have asked for a refund but have yet to have my account credited!
not for me
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I am not sure what I expected but Budget Travel did not do anything for me. My wife and I are in our 30s and have a desire to see the United States and the rest of the world. I was hoping for reviews of resorts and cruise lines and fun trips that were planned out for us. Most of the places reviewed did not interest us and seemed to be geared towards older couples who had time to take weeks off for a vacation. By the end of the year it seemed like the magazine was becoming very predictible.
I did enjoy the tips from other travelers and the prices on the cheapest vacations were nice to browse. My suggestion is to make the magazine more hip or at least have a section on travel for the younger crowd.
Great Ideas
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is a wonderful magazine for different ideas for vacations. I would highly recommend it.
My favorite magazine
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This magazine is one of my nightly treats! I take it with me to bed and read it until I fell asleep, dreaming about the vacations awaiting me.
This great magazine covers just anywhere in the world. I have learnt a lot about travelling. I even love it’s advertisements(the vacation packages).
Good Place To Start Travel Plans
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Arthur Frommer’s “Budget Travel” is a terrifc magazine for those thinking about travel or vacation. In the 10 issues you get over a year(for a “budget” price no less), you’ll find hundreds of ideas for places to go and suggestions on how to get there, when is the best time to go, where and what to eat, where to stay, local shopping, the list goes on. And..the great part is the writers of the articles have done all the work for you. They have combed the web for the best prices, attractions to visit, and for accomodations that suit your needs, and in most cases have actually visited the destination or taken the Road Trip to let you know how it went.
There are articles of interest for those wanting a family style vacation( a recent article, listed and wrote about camps that the entire family could attend, with various price ranges), romantic getaways or business trips. Maybe you are looking for the best cruise deal, or want to tour Europe. There’s something for every style of travel.
Every month there is a “Trip Coach”. People write in and have a good idea of where they want to go, and BT plans out an entire itinerary for them. “Road Trip” is another monthly feature that plans out an excursion through a particular area. These articles give lots of details of places to go, and things to do and see along the way. They also give you a breakdown of choices in different price ranges, of hotel accomodations, travel modes, restaurants, and attractions. In a recent article they even listed which hotels where geared toward people interested in environmental issues.
So for the person looking for some great ideas for a vacation, or anyone just wanting to get away for a while, this magazine offers excellent advice. However, I thought there were too many ads for vacation spots that were “over-budget”. Also, I would have liked to have seen a little more for those wanting to travel for an extended period of time. Maybe for those retiring, and want to see the country in a RV for example.(although there was an article recently on how to BUY an RV, there wasn’t much in the way of travel ideas).
Overall, you really get your money’s worth with ideas for travel, and a periodical that will save you time and money. It’s a good place to start your vacation plans, and you may not have to go any further!
Enjoy….Laurie
The ’40 Best’ Rules
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
‘Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel’ is a good magazine, with one absolute standout feature: the ’40 Best’ bargain vacations area. Every issue has great tips for the 40 best values for different vacations in different regions. Although I have never actually taken any of these vacations exactly as listed, I have on several occasions found them useful as a starting point for planning a trip.
The remainder of the magazine is fairly standard, and I think a bit repetitive. Occasionally I find useful tips in the ’20 Tips’ section, but more often than not the tips are so specific as to be fairly useless, along the lines of ‘Did you know that on alternating Saturdays of months beginning with the letter “M” between the hours of 2:10 PM and 2:48 PM, the London Zoo gives out three free bamboo shoots to feed the pandas to the first seven people who ask?.’ That is an obvious exaggeration, but not by much. I find the travel articles in general well written, but a bit repetitive (how many times can we hear about Paris or London?) and not terribly informative.
My biggest objection is to the editorial tone in the magazine: I am all in favor of a bargain, but some of the wheedling and whining makes me want to say “Enough. This guy has to earn a living, too.” For instance, the editors regularly complain about high airfares, but a few months ago ran an editorial piece that wanted to boycott airlines that ran ads at the beginning of the inflight entertainment videos. I guess that they would rather the airlines not accept that money from corporate accounts, and instead have higher ticket prices? My point is this: you can’t have it both ways, so stop trying. When you get a great deal on airfare, hotels, or rental cars, great, but know when to stop. Otherwise you start to look greedy.
Four stars overall: the ’40 Best’ is one of the best features in any travel magazine, period. One point reduction for somewhat repetitive features and editorial tone. Great job overall: go to some new places and you will be up to five stars.
Useful for Any Traveler
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I go to a gym where people share their magazines, and came across this gem. While it focuses on value vacation packages, the benefit that I’ve gained from it is its monthly list of 40 top vacation packages to destinations around the world. The magazine also offers an up-to-date web page describing even more places and bargains. It has really expanded my horizons about possible vacation spots. That alone is worth the reasonable cost.
I love to travel and here this megazines will definitely make me more passionate about travelling. Thank you for sharing.
Unfortunately, the link didn’t work!
I love to travel, but haven’t been able to do as much as I’d like since having children. We usually end up going to England, where my husband’s family is. Hopefully, when all our children are off to college my husband and I will be able to do more (if we can afford it after tuition)! Our last big trip was to Israel, but our next one happens to be to Italy and France with the kids.
If you get the link up and running again. Let us know. Thanks.
