Equator: Journey to the Middle Of the World
Posted April 25, 2008 by Ed Szajniak · Filed Under Adventures
The equator lies a short drive (20km) north of Quito, Ecuador.
At the exact line that separates the northern and southern hemispheres, there is monument and a yellow line painted on the ground. Also at Mitad del Mundo, or middle of the world, there is a small museum with artifacts from each of Ecuador’s ethnic groups. Some of the locals claim that there was a mistake made when they marked the equator and they will show you where the real equator lies… for a price.

Wasting Energy: How Penticton Celebrates Earth Day
Posted April 22, 2008 by Rosalind Gardner · Filed Under At Home
It is Earth Day and I am appalled and disgusted by the complete lack of regard that the both the City of Penticton and a local baseball league has for both the environment and city taxpayers.

Snowy April Day in Penticton
Posted April 19, 2008 by Rosalind Gardner · Filed Under At Home
I woke up to a delightful sight at 4AM this morning — 2 inches of snow on the ground and it was still coming down!
Yeah! OK, I LIKE unusual weather occurences. Besides, it might have been the last opportunity to jump out of the hot tub and have a good roll in the snow. Maybe that’s a Canadian thing.
By 6:30AM there was about 3 inches on the ground and my spring tulips, daffodils and grape hyacinths weren’t looking too happy.
Here is what the terrace looked like this morning:
There are more pictures of droopy daffodils and tulips here on Flickr.
Secret Seats on Airplanes
Posted April 10, 2008 by Rosalind Gardner · Filed Under Travel Tips
I’m pretty particular about the seats I get on flights, especially when the flight lasts longer than an hour.
For example, you’ll never catch me sitting in the middle seat of a row of three — I’d just as soon catch a later flight. By result, I spend as much time skulking around SeatGuru.com in order to select the best seats available on any specific flight as I do choosing the flight itself.
In this video, Peter Greenberg shows you where some preferred seats are to be found - in coach of all places.

Penticton: Fire Destroys Hamlets Project
Posted April 7, 2008 by Rosalind Gardner · Filed Under At Home
While watching the fire, my appreciation for what firefighters do increased immeasurably. From where we stood across the street from the Safeway was HOT… and those guys were working directly next to the inferno. How they managed to keep the Safeway from turning into the biggest barbeque and weiner roast this town has ever seen was absolutely amazing.
I’ve uploaded a set of 24 pictures to our Flickr account in which you can see how the fire progressed over the course of 20 minutes — from the roof being ablaze to there being almost nothing left of the first building.
Our hearts go out to all those affected by this huge loss - everyone from the workers and contractors involved in the project, to the workers who were to be employed at the facility and those who were to have made the facility their home.

SkyBus Airlines Files for Bankruptcy
Posted April 5, 2008 by Rosalind Gardner · Filed Under News
In operation for less than a year, the airline was operating 80 daily flights to 15 cities around the States with 11 aircraft and had employed 450 people.
In a press release, Skybus CEO Michael Hodge stated:
“We deeply regret this decision, and the impact this will have on our employees and their families, our customers, our vendors and other partners, and the communities in which we have been operating.”
Regretable indeed.
Those holding Skybus reservations are advised to contact their credit card companies for refund information.
