Dirtiest Hotel in America

Posted January 21, 2007 by Ed Szajniak · Filed Under Hotels, News

The list that no hotel wants to be on is the Dirtiest Hotel in America.
Five out of the ten hotels are located in Florida. The worst being the Tropicana Resort Hotel, Virginia Beach, Vir.

TripAdvisors Travelers Choice Awards for 2006 were presented to Hotels that excelled in various categories. These include Best Luxury, Best Service, Best Inns, Best for Romance, Best Pool, Best for Families, Best Bargains and Best Hidden Gems.

Unlike other awards that get comments from selected travelers these are based on the comments left by millions of travelers at Tripadvisor.com

Ros and I like to use Expedia when choosing hotels. We like to read the comments left by our fellow travelers. If a hotel is constantly getting good reviews it’s a pretty safe bet.

Hand-Crank Flashlight Doesn’t Need Batteries

Posted January 21, 2007 by Rosalind Gardner · Filed Under Electronics

Dynamo Hand-Crank FlashlightWith power outages in Western Canada becoming more and more common, I have these hand-crank / shaker flashlights
stashed away in every room of my house.

The beauty of it is, there are no batteries needed! You just Shake it to light it.

A 30-second shaking generates power for five minutes of bright illumination. OK, so it’s wise to shake them up BEFORE you need them.

They’re shockproof, rubber-guarded, waterproof, floatable and ideal for every vehicle or home emergency kit. The LED bulb never needs replacing and there are no batteries to worry about ever!

Le Reve at Wynn Las Vegas!

Posted January 19, 2007 by Rosalind Gardner · Filed Under Entertainment

I’m off to the Affiliate Summit in Las Vegas tomorrow and can hardly wait as I plan to see Le Reve at the Wynn while I’m there.

Here’s the description of the show from the Wynn’s site “LE RÊVE presented exclusively at Wynn Las Vegas, offers breathtaking performances in an intimate aqua theater in-the-round. The show features aerial acrobatics, provocative choreography and artistic athleticism“.

The cast of 85 captures the imagination with their outrageous antics and daring feats of strength and agility. Live music and elaborate special effects immerse the audience into a world of fantasy, adventure and intrigue“.

As I’m a huge Cirque du Soleil fan, LE RÊVE should be right up my alley.

Going to Vegas? You too can see Le Reve at Wynn Las Vegas!

Posted January 17, 2007 by Ed Szajniak · Filed Under News

Starting January 30, 2007 all Air Canada flights will check-in at Toronto Pearson International Airport, Terminal 1. In the past passengers connecting to the USA or other international destinations had to leave Terminal 1 and connect through Terminal 2.

Some Air Canada Jazz flights to the USA, will be out of East Satellite Terminal.

Connecting through Pearson will be a lot easier.

Snow Globes Prohibited!

Posted January 15, 2007 by Ed Szajniak · Filed Under News

I was looking through the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) Website for travel updates when I noticed that Snow globes are now prohibited items in your carry-on.
Regardless of size or amount of liquid inside and even with documentation.

You must also remember that bringing a prohibited item to security even accidentally is an illegal act!

I wonder if you’ll be able to take your globe to the slammer with you.

Airport Security Broke My Laptop!

Posted January 14, 2007 by Rosalind Gardner · Filed Under Rants

VAIO SZ Series Notebook VGN-SZ691N/XMan, was I choked when I realized that the airport security staff at Toronto International airport broke my Sony VAIO laptop. Here’s what happened.

I had placed my long coat and purse into one tray and my laptop in another to go through the Xray. I then remembered that I would also have to remove my suit jacket, but there were no more trays available, so I placed the jacket under the laptop.

BIG mistake!

All laptops have to go through the Xray in their own separate tray. So, one of the security staff grabbed my VAIO and obviously THREW it in another tray.

It wasn’t until we got to the lounge, where I planned to check my email, that I realised something was horribly amiss with my computer. :-( It simply would not power up, and worse, it looks like it might be a gonner. One computer shop couldn’t fix it, so now it’s on its way back to Sony, which charges $350 CDN, just to open the thing up and take a look.

Meanwhile, I’m on my way to Vegas next week for 4 days and couldn’t be without a laptop. So… I bought a new VAIO SZ Series.

The upside… I LOVE my new VAIO.

This notebook is razor-thin, incredibly fast and for my aging eyes, the 13.3″ screen is a definite improvement over the little 10.4″ screen on the other VAIO.

I also like that it comes with a built-in camera and microphone, especially after being stuck in the boondocks of Mexico for a month last winter in a community with no phone and a computer that didn’t have a microphone. (I forgot to bring my headset.) Talk about frustrating - being able to hear your friends chat on Google Talk but having to type your replies. Aargh!

Too, not having to remember my headset is a big benefit for my aging brain. :-)

Hotels Tracking Your Internet Browsing Activities

Posted January 14, 2007 by Rosalind Gardner · Filed Under News

Browsing the Internet from your hotel room? Well, it turns out that hotels using Superclick as their Internet service provider are tracking your browser activities in order to deliver targeted advertising messages. Here’s a bit from their press release.

Sandro Natale, CEO of Superclick, commented that “We believe that our MDS application is going to change the way advertising, marketing and other targeted messages can be delivered over private networks. MDS enables hoteliers and conference center managers to more effectively brand and market their own services and amenities and importantly, it creates an unprecedented and powerful advertising solution and revenue center.”

Superclick’s MDS allows hoteliers and conference center managers to leverage the investment they have made in their IP infrastructure to create advertising revenue, deliver targeted marketing and brand messages to guests and users on their network. “Perhaps the most powerful aspect of MDS is that it can be integrated onto any third-party managed network, not just our own proprietary SIMS network,” Natale added, “In addition, we have developed MDS Analytics which provides marketers with real-time network performance and usage analysis, thereby enabling them to evaluate the ROI of their marketing efforts.”

Superclick’s clients include MTU residences and Candlewood Suites®, Crowne Plaza®, Four Points by Sheraton®, InterContinental Hotels Group PLC®, Hilton®, Holiday Inn®, Holiday Inn Express®, Hampton Inn®, Marriott®, Novotel®, Radisson®, Sheraton®, Westin® and Wyndham® hotels in Canada, the Caribbean and the United States.

Read the full press release.

I suspect that someone in the hotel industry read my book on affiliate marketing and decided to embrace that monetization channel. :-)
