Did you know that for the past four years U. S. and foreign travelers have been assessed by the computerized Automated Targeting System. American citizens are not allowed to see or challenge their risk assessment.
These assessments are shared with state, local and foreign governments and even some private firms. Records will be kept for 40 years.
The data collected is wide ranging and includes items such as where you are from, how you paid for tickets, your motor vehicle records, past one-way travel, seating preference and what kind of meal you ordered.

Hepatitis - Shocking Discovery
Posted January 30, 2007 by Ed Szajniak · Filed Under Health, Travel Tips
Ros and I are heading to South-East Asia soon. Part of the prep work is to make sure we are healthy. We have an appointment at the travel health clinic to check on what shots we will need.
I had my Hepatitis shots in 2001 before we went to Peru. I asked my Doctor for a test to see if I was still protected. Well I was shocked to find out that I had no protection against Hepatitis A or B.
I had assumed that all would be well but I am glad that I decided to get checked. I will be getting the Twinrix shots again. Since time is limited I will follow the rapid vaccination schedule of 0-7-21. The initial shot followed by the second 7 days later and the third 21 days after the first. A booster shot is given 12 later.
If you have not been tested to see if are immune it may be time to make an appointment.

Going to France? Leave the Cigarettes at Home
Posted January 30, 2007 by Rosalind Gardner · Filed Under News
The big news from France this week is that as of February 1st, smoking will be banned in French schools, hospitals and youth centres. A wider ban from Jan. 1, 2008 will incorporate bars, restaurants and workplaces.
The French aren’t happy about the change, according to this comment in a Reuters press release this morning…
“It’s bullshit,” fumed Paris office worker Aida Malika, shivering outside her workplace in Paris.
“They’re taking away our small pleasures. They’re just treating us like cattle, that’s really what it is,” she said, before heading back to work.
Fines range from 68 euros for individuals to 135 euros for building management that allows smoking to take place.
C’est la vie.

Tips on Tipping
Posted January 28, 2007 by Ed Szajniak · Filed Under Travel Tips
Living in Canada and doing a lot of traveling in North America tipping is natural, we seem to tip everyone everywhere. The only concern is how much to tip. Tips range from 10 to 20% percent or more depending on the service we receive. Sometimes tips are given because they are expected rather than deserved.
Once you leave North America the waters become very murky. Tipping customs are as varied as the locations visited.
In some cultures tipping is considered rude. In others a service charge is added to your bill.
It is a good idea to do a little research on tipping customs before you depart. That’s what I was doing for our upcoming trip to East Asia when I decided to write this post.
Check out this article for some valuable tips.

Tropical Island - No Passport Required
Posted January 26, 2007 by Ed Szajniak · Filed Under News
In the past U.S. citizens could travel to Canada, Mexico and several Caribbean islands with only a drivers license. With the new regulations that have taken affect with regard to air travel, they now need a passport to re-enter the USA. Only 27 percent of U.S. citizens hold passports.
For U.S. citizens not holding passports and in need of a winter getaway the answer is Puerto Rico. No passport required.
The island expects a boom in visitors from the U. S.
Other Caribbean islands are fearing a drop in business as U.S. visitors account for nearly 70% of business in some locations.
